A course trainer wearing green and black uniform is watching a delegate practice CPR on manikin. The delegate is performing chest compressions, kneeling by the manikin and putting the heel of one hand in the centre of the manikin's chest. She has placed her other hand on top of the first and interlocked her fingers.

About the course

This two hour CPR training course provides basic lifesaving skills to someone who may come across an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing. You will learn about the different types of CPR, and how to perform it effectively.

CPR is short for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It is a life saving first aid method where you will be performing chest compressions on an unresponsive casualty. You will usually give 30 compressions, followed by 2 rescue breaths (mouth to mouth). In some situations, you may choose to provide compression only CPR. With every compression you will need to have a depth of around 5-6cm. CPR will be needed when cardiac arrests occur. This could be the result of a heart attack, or many other emergency situations.

CPR is also a key component of the chain of survival. The 4 links of this chain are: Early access to emergency help (call 999). Early CPR. Early use of an external automatic defibrillator, also known as a defib or AED. Early advanced life support. That’s why performing CPR and providing basic life support (BLS) plays an important role in improving the chances of survival. It is a key component that gives an unresponsive person the best chance of surviving.

St John Ambulance Cymru teaches CPR first aid training at our centres across Wales. If six or more individuals need CPR training, we can come to you. For more information, ring us on 0300 201 1999 or email training@sjacymru.org.uk.

We offer a course in Emergency First Aid at Work as well as a First Aid at Work 3 Day course. Those who wish to have a deeper understanding of first aid should consider taking one of these courses. If you want to be a designated first aider, you will also need to take one of these courses. Knowing CPR will not be enough in many emergency scenarios.
