First aid sessions in the community

St John Ambulance Cymru staff teaching a little girl how to do CPR on a manikin. They are in a booth at an event. The staff member is wearing a black coat and is demonstrating how to give chest compressions. In the background, is a table which has informational materials on and a table cloth with the St John Ambulance Cymru logo.

Our work with schools and community groups

We offer free first aid awareness sessions for schools, colleges, universities, and community groups, delivered at your location by one of our expert trainers.

All participants will receive an e-certificate for their participation (please note this is not a formal qualification). We have a maximum of 30 per course, however we can accommodate larger groups for demonstration-only sessions.

For more information on our first aid awareness sessions in the community, please email communitytraining@sjacymru.org.uk.

What community sessions do we provide?

Our sessions will not provide you with a formal qualification, but they are a great way to learn about the basics of first aid.

The First Aid Awareness session covers how to manage an incident, conduct a primary survey and perform resuscitation (CPR), as well as how to treat an unresponsive casualty, bleeding, and choking. The session is 2 hours long.

The Public Access Defibrillator Awareness session covers how to manage an incident, carry out a primary survey and resuscitation (CPR), and introduces the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The session is 2 hours long

The Child and Infant First Aid Awareness session covers how to manage an incident, carry out a primary survey and child and infant resuscitation (CPR), and how to treat an unresponsive casualty and choking. The session is 2 hours long.

The Outdoor First Aid session covers how to manage an incident, as well as how to deal with bone and muscle injuries, extremes of temperature, foreign objects, bites and stings, and head injuries. The session is 2 hours long.

The First Aid Demonstration/ Assembly is a presentation-only session without active participant involvement. The demonstration is 10-30 minutes long.

A St John Ambulance Cymru volunteer is kneeling on the floor with a CPR training manikin laid out in front of her. Circled around her are little girls, who are sat cross legged and watching the first aid demonstration. They appear to be in a classroom setting.

How to request a first aid session

You can request for a trainer to come and deliver a session at your school, college, university or community group here.

During our main campaigns, which are listed below, we run an increased amount of sessions for groups and in public spaces.

Defibruary – Throughout the month of February, we aim to train as many people as possible in using a defibrillator.

Save a Life September – The month of September sees us working within communities in Wales to raise awareness for basic first aid skills such as CPR.

For more information on our first aid awareness sessions in the community, please email communitytraining@sjacymru.org.uk.

New First Aid and Resuscitation Guidelines from the Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) are coming into effect on the 1st January. These updates may affect what is taught and delivered in these sessions.
